Michael Asbury

Dr. Michael Asbury is a Reader at the University of Arts London's Camberwell, Chelsea and Wimbledon Colleges. As Deputy Director of the TrAIN research center, he specializes in Brazilian modern and contemporary art, employing post-colonial methodologies to question Western art canons. An Anglo-Brazilian art historian and curator, he has collaborated with major institutions including Tate Modern and Camden Arts Centre.

His research examines transnational art flows, institutional critique, and the porous nature of cultural boundaries. Publications analyze Brazilian constructivism, exhibition histories, and artist retrospectives, emphasizing the interplay between artistic agency and cultural identity. Curatorial projects focus on Latin American artists like Lygia Clark and Anna Maria Maiolino.

Educational leadership includes developing international PhD programs and supervising 22 doctoral completions. Grants include British Academy funding for Brazilian contemporary art research and AHRC support for transnational projects examining cultural exchange beyond traditional art centers.
