Michael Alram is a Research Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study, specializing in Iranian numismatics and ancient history spanning from the 6th century BCE Achaemenid Empire to the 7th/8th century CE Arab conquest of Iran. His career integrates rigorous academic research with significant public scholarship through major international exhibitions.
His core research focuses on:
- Numismatic analysis of Achaemenid, Parthian, and Sasanian coinage
- Cultural history of the Iranian Huns and Western Turks in Central Asia
- Art historical trajectories along Silk Road civilizations
Alram co-directs the Sylloge Nummorum Sasanidarum (SNS) with France's Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique and founded the Sylloge Nummorum Parthicorum (SNP) in 2006 through the British Institute of Persian Studies, coordinating collections across London, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, and Tehran museums. His public-facing work includes curating Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum exhibitions "7000 Jahre Persische Kunst" (2000) and "Das Antlitz des Fremden" (2012), alongside collaborations like "Monks and Merchants: Silk Road Treasures" (New York, 2001) and "Alexander der Große" (Mannheim, 2009).
These projects demonstrate sustained interdisciplinary engagement with Persianate and Central Asian heritage, bridging academic numismatics with museum anthropology and public history initiatives.
