Professor Michael Aitken-Deakin is a Professor of Experimental Psychology and Head of the Department of Psychology at King's College London. His academic career includes roles such as Director of BSc Psychology and Deputy Head of Department. He previously held positions at the University of Cambridge, including Deputy Director of Education in the School of Biological Sciences and a Fellowship at Selwyn College. He holds an MA (Cantab) and PhD in Experimental Psychology from Cambridge. His research focuses on decision-making, gambling behavior, associative learning, and mental health, with notable contributions to understanding cognitive processes in psychosis and addiction. He has authored/co-authored textbooks like Mathematics for Biological Sciences and Analysis of Variance for Behavioral Sciences Researchers, and was awarded the 2014 University of Cambridge Pilkington Prize for Teaching. His work spans experimental psychology, neurophysiology, and clinical applications, with collaborations in neuroscience and behavioral economics.

Research interests include gambling psychology, decision-making under stress, and neural mechanisms of learning. His publications explore topics such as near-miss effects in gambling, cognitive biases in ASD, and the role of prediction errors in psychosis. He has advised on aviation decision-making under stress and contributed to studies on ketamine’s psychotogenic effects. He leads the Experimental and Social Psychology Research Group (EASY) at King’s College London.
