Michael A. Bertucci is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Lafayette College, where he conducts research at the intersection of organic chemistry, biochemistry, and microbiology. His work focuses on designing and synthesizing peptide-based modulators of bacterial quorum sensing systems with applications in human health. He teaches Organic Chemistry I and II, along with specialized courses in medicinal chemistry and undergraduate research experiences.
- Ph.D. in Chemistry, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2014)
- B.S. in Chemical Biology, Stevens Institute of Technology (2009)
Bertucci's research program centers on investigating chemical interventions in bacterial communication systems known as quorum sensing. His laboratory synthesizes and studies peptides that modulate quorum sensing in both pathogenic bacteria (like Streptococcus gordonii and Bacillus cereus) and beneficial probiotic bacteria (like Lactiplantibacillus plantarum). His work aims to develop strategies for controlling bacterial virulence while enhancing beneficial microbial functions. His research spans organic synthesis, biochemical analysis, and microbiological testing, creating a multidisciplinary approach to understanding bacterial communication.
His recent publications demonstrate a clear trajectory toward increasingly sophisticated peptide design and application, with a focus on structure-activity relationships in bacterial signaling molecules. The research shows progression from fundamental studies of peptide interactions to applied therapeutic development, with growing attention to the translational potential of quorum sensing modulation for human health applications.
- Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award (2023)
- NSF CAREER Award (2021)
- Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching (2017)
Bertucci actively mentors undergraduate researchers, with numerous students co-authoring publications and presenting at national conferences. His NSF CAREER award funds both research and educational initiatives, including the Institute for Future PUI Faculty (IFPF), which provides graduate students with exposure to teaching at primarily undergraduate institutions. He maintains active collaborations with researchers at University of Nevada, Reno and Hebrew University of Jerusalem, providing students with opportunities for interdisciplinary and international research experiences.
Bertucci leads the Bertucci Group, which maintains a collaborative research environment focused on peptide chemistry and bacterial communication. The group participates in regular departmental activities and national conferences, fostering a strong research community both within Lafayette College and across the broader scientific community.
