Michael A. Allen is a Professor and Faculty in Residence in the Department of Political Science at Boise State University's School of Public Service. His research and teaching focus on areas of conflict (both between states and non-state actors), power disparity, and methodology, with particular emphasis on international asymmetry in arenas including conflict and cooperation.
Dr. Allen earned his Ph.D. from Binghamton University and his B.A. from the University of Puget Sound. His academic expertise centers on US military deployments abroad and their effects on host countries, examining both positive and negative externalities of troop presence. His research has been supported by the Minerva Research Initiative, U.S. Army Research Laboratory and the U.S. Army Research Office under grant number W911NF-18-1-0087.
Dr. Allen's scholarly work has appeared in top journals including The American Political Science Review, International Studies Quarterly, The Journal of Conflict Resolution, and Foreign Policy Analysis. His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on how US troop deployments affect host countries across multiple dimensions including public opinion, crime rates, defense spending, and economic relations. His 2022 book "Beyond the Wire: US Military Deployments and Host Country Public Opinion" represents a major synthesis of this research agenda.
Dr. Allen actively contributes to public discourse through op-eds in The Monkey Cage, The Political Quarterly, The Conversation, and other prominent media outlets where he analyzes contemporary issues in US foreign policy and military strategy.
His research methodology combines quantitative analysis with qualitative approaches, utilizing diverse data sources including survey data from multiple waves, protest data, crime statistics, and military expenditure records across numerous countries to examine the complex effects of US military presence abroad.
