Jo Jakobsen

Jo Jakobsen is a Professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), affiliated with the Department of Sociology and Political Science within the Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology Management. He earned his PhD at NTNU in 2007 and has since contributed extensively to research on international security, geopolitics, political risk, and migration studies. His work often bridges theoretical frameworks with empirical analyses of global power dynamics, including U.S. military deployments and the geopolitical implications of international business operations.

Education: PhD in Sociology and Political Science (NTNU, 2007); his doctoral work on political risk for multinational companies won the 2008 Prize for Young Excellent Researchers in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

• Migration patterns to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and refugee crises
• Security dilemma dynamics and international security competition
• Democratic peace theory and public opinion on conflict

Awards: Recipient of the Bernard Brodie Prize (2019) for his article on U.S. troop deployments' impact on host-country citizens' bellicosity. His 2022 monograph, 'The Geopolitics of U.S. Overseas Troops and Withdrawal,' offers a critical analysis of U.S. military retrenchment resistance.

Grants and Collaborations: Active in the GISI Project (Geostrategic Importance of Small Islands) and a member of SPECTRE (Studies on Political Economy: Currencies, Trade, Risk & Energy). His research often involves cross-national collaborations, particularly with Marko Valenta and Tor G. Jakobsen.
