Mia Fischer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Colorado Denver, with affiliate roles in the Women and Gender Studies program and the LGBTQ+ Faculty Assembly Committee. Her research bridges critical media studies, queer and transgender studies, sports studies, and surveillance studies, focusing on the intersection of gender, media, and power structures.
- PhD in Communication, University of Minnesota (2016)
- MA in Communication, College of Charleston (2010)
- BA in Communication, University of Mannheim (2008)
Her groundbreaking book Terrorizing Gender examines how transgender visibility triggers conservative backlash through increased surveillance by the U.S. security state. Her recent projects analyze anti-trans legislation post-2020 within the context of white supremacy and anti-democratic movements. Fischer co-led the Denver Pen Pal Collaborative (2017–2021), advocating for incarcerated individuals through artistic expression.
Key publication trends include critiques of anti-trans rhetoric in sports policy, military surveillance of transgender bodies, and media representations of LGBTQ+ activism.
