Dr. Cael Marcas Keegan is an Associate Professor in the College of Fine Arts at Concordia University. He is a leading scholar in transgender and queer media studies, with research focusing on LGBTQ+ media histories, transgender phenomenologies, and queer cultural production. His academic work interrogates the intersection of popular screen cultures and transgender representation through lenses of gender studies, affect theory, and critical realism.
- Education: PhD in American Studies, University at Buffalo (2010)
Keegan’s research advocates for a transgender imaginary that challenges realist media frameworks and cisgender/transgender binaries. His work examines "bad" trans media objects as sites of cultural resistance, particularly in gaming and film contexts like The Silence of the Lambs and Nopamine: On Gaming, Agony, and Trans Survival. His Queer Film Classics series contributions and editorial roles in journals like Transgender Studies Quarterly underscore his impact on queer film scholarship.
Recent publications span trans media theory (2016-2025), with peer-reviewed articles in Film Quarterly, Studies in World Cinema, and Journal of Cinema and Media Studies. His work also covers queer melodrama in TV (e.g., Buffy the Vampire Slayer), trans narratives in digital platforms, and media gentrification of queer cinema post-recession. Articles demonstrate interdisciplinary engagement with cinematic bodies, speculative media, and trans survival strategies.
- Scientific Award: Fulbright Distinguished Research Chair (2021-2022)
As a supervisor in Film and Moving Image Studies (MA/PhD), Keegan mentors graduate research on trans media analysis and queer film history. His teaching includes courses like The Wachowskis and Todd Haynes and Transgender Film and Media Studies, reflecting his commitment to queer/trans pedagogy.
