Dr. Merve Burnazoglu is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Utrecht University's School of Economics. She holds positions in the Applied Economics Section and teaches in both Economics & Business Economics and the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) program. Her research focuses on Political Economy and Economic Methodology, particularly examining how AI and algorithms influence identity-based structural inequalities. Current work includes analyzing algorithmic mediation's role in labor markets and policy design.
Education: MSc in Economics (Public Policy & Philosophical Foundations) from Aix-Marseille School of Economics; BSc in Economics from Hacettepe University. She also completed exchange programs at the University of Bayreuth and Strasbourg.
Research Themes: Applied Data Science, Human-centered AI, Institutional Analysis, Migration Integration, and Stratification Economics. She guest-edited a special issue on Stratification Economics and contributes to initiatives like the European Association for Evolutionary Political Economy (EAEPE) and the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET).
Awards include 3rd place in the 2016 Falling Walls Lab Groningen and the William R. Waters Research Grant. Teaching roles include Chair of the PPE Curriculum Committee and coordination of interdisciplinary courses like Integrating Insights: Markets.
Professional Activities: Coordinator for Social Economics at EAEPE, Philosophy of Economics Working Group lead at INET's Young Scholars Initiative, and seminar organizer for the Society for the Social Sciences of Quantification (SSSQ).
