Merrill Warkentin, PhD, is the William L. Giles Distinguished Professor and James J. Rouse Endowed Professor of Information Systems at Mississippi State University’s College of Business. His research focuses on behavioral aspects of information security, privacy, and insider threats. He has authored over 300 manuscripts, including 120 peer-reviewed articles, and holds an h-index of 53. His work has been cited nearly 19,000 times.
- Education: PhD in Management Information Systems (1986), MA in Economics (1983), BA in Economics (1981), all from the University of Nebraska.
- Editorial Roles: Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Intellectual Capital and former senior editor at MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, and others.
- Leadership: Co-founder of IFIP Working Group 8.11/11.13 on Information Security Research, awarded Outstanding Leadership (2015) and IFIP Service Recognition (2017).
Research Interests: Behavioral IS security, privacy policy compliance, social media behavior, and eGovernment. Key areas include insider threats, cybersecurity messaging, and organizational risk homeostasis.
Awards: AIS Fellow, ACM Distinguished Scientist, Stanford’s Top 2% Global Scientist, and University of Arizona’s Top 125 IS Scholars.
