Garrison Gao

Garrison Gao is a Lecturer (equivalent to Assistant Professor in the US) at the School of Physics, Maths and Computing, specializing in Computer Science and Software Engineering at The University of Western Australia. Previously, he held tenured roles as a Research Scientist and Senior Research Scientist at Data61, CSIRO. He is an IEEE Senior Member and serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security, and IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems. His research focuses on AI security, system security, and hardware security, with notable contributions to federated learning, adversarial machine learning, and threat detection frameworks.

Education: M.Sc from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) and Ph.D. from the University of Adelaide, Australia.

Research interests include AI security and privacy, system security, hardware security, and advanced persistent threat detection. He has received prestigious awards such as the Distinguished Paper Award at Usenix Security 2024 and AsiaCCS 2023, and has been recognized as a 'World's top 2 scientists' (Highly Cited Researcher) in 2022–2024.

Recent research outputs include studies on deceptive pattern detection, federated learning vulnerabilities, firmware security tools, and protocol reverse engineering. His work emphasizes practical security solutions for emerging technologies like federated learning and IoT systems.
