Mercedes Carnethon is Professor and Chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Her dual appointments include Preventive Medicine (Epidemiology) and Medicine (Pulmonary and Critical Care). A Stanford University BA graduate (1996) with UNC Chapel Hill MS (1998) and PhD (2000), she completed postdoctoral training at Stanford University School of Medicine (2002).
Her research spans cardiovascular disease epidemiology, obesity, diabetes, lung health, and cognitive aging across diverse population subgroups. Key focuses include health behaviors (diet, physical activity, sleep), social determinants, and health equity, particularly examining race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and gender identity intersections.
