Dr Mengyi Xu is an Assistant Professor in Human Resource Management and Director of the Full-time MBA at the Birmingham Business School, University of Birmingham. She joined the university in January 2024, having previously served as Assistant Professor in HRM & Employment Relations at Cranfield University and Lecturer in HRM & Organisational Behaviour at Anglia Ruskin University. Her academic affiliations include the Department of Management, and she holds professional memberships with the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), and the Work-Family Researcher Network as an Early Career Fellow.
Research Interests: Dr Xu's research centers on work-life balance and inclusion, boundary management, and the future of work—particularly hybrid working and the four-day work week. She investigates how work-life inclusion supports sustainable careers for diverse groups, including single individuals, racially minoritised employees, portfolio career workers, and those in emerging economies such as China. Her work emphasizes the social, technological, and psychological dimensions of new working models.
The recent publications by Dr Xu reflect a strong focus on work-life interface, flexible working arrangements, and the future of work. Her research combines theoretical perspectives like signaling theory with empirical studies across Western and Eastern contexts. Key themes include hybrid work challenges, emotional appraisal in boundary management, and the cultural specificity of work-life balance in China. She employs mixed-methods approaches, including interviews, surveys, and autoethnography, to explore both individual and organizational implications of evolving work practices.

Her research and consultancy projects have received support from the British Academy of Management, Forces in Mind Trust, and the Wellcome Trust ASPIRE project. She is also an External Examiner for the MSc HRM at the University of Surrey and serves on committees within the British Academy of Management and the Association of British Chinese Professors.
Labs and Teams: Dr Xu is actively involved in professional networks including the Aurora Female Leadership Network, UK Research & Innovation Early Career Researcher Forum, and the Academy of Management. She contributes as a reviewer for journals such as HRM Journal, Journal of Business Ethics, Work, Employment and Society, and New Technology, Work and Employment, and for ESRC New Investigator Grants.
