Melody Barnes is the founding executive director of the Karsh Institute of Democracy at the University of Virginia, where she also holds several academic and leadership roles. She is the W.L. Lyons Brown Family Director for Policy and Public Engagement in the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences’ Democracy Initiative, a professor of practice at the Miller Center of Public Affairs, and a distinguished fellow at the UVA School of Law. Her career blends public service, policy leadership, and academic engagement, with a focus on strengthening democratic institutions and civic participation.

The Institute collaborates with national organizations such as the National Constitution Center and the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Art in Embassies. Its initiatives, including 'Talking Across Difference,' aim to foster open dialogue in a polarized society.
