Dr. Mellisa Clawson is a Professor of Early Childhood Education and Early Childhood Special Education at the University of Maine at Farmington. She holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Child Development from Auburn University, and a B.S. in Psychology from Birmingham-Southern College. Her work spans teaching, administration, and consulting across infant, toddler, preschool, Head Start, and public school settings.

Her research and advocacy focus on inclusive education practices, autism spectrum disorder, place-based science education, and supporting families of children with disabilities. She serves as president of Franklin County’s child abuse prevention agency’s Board of Directors and presents nationally on topics related to early childhood special education and cultural responsiveness.
Dr. Clawson teaches courses including guidance strategies, creative arts for young children, and the intersection of the opioid crisis with family systems. She emphasizes culturally responsive interventions and community engagement in her professional activities.
