Prior to joining CSU, she accumulated 12 years of clinical experience at MetroHealth Medical Center across diverse settings including Skilled Nursing and Long Term Care, Inpatient Rehabilitation, Acute Care, Outpatient, and Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic.
She holds a Master of Science (MS) degree and is a certified Speech-Language Pathologist (CCC-SLP), with clinical expertise developed through hands-on work with pediatric and adult populations. Her educational background directly supports her specialized clinical and academic focus.
Professor Volk's primary research and clinical passion centers on brain injury rehabilitation, evidenced by her four-year service as Member at Large for the Brain Injury Association of Ohio. Her comprehensive expertise spans neurological rehabilitation for pediatric and adult patients, voice therapy, dysphagia management, head and neck cancer rehabilitation, autism spectrum disorders, childhood apraxia of speech, concussion care, geriatric communication disorders, and literacy challenges. She emphasizes translating this knowledge into practical clinical training that develops critical thinking skills in future speech-language pathologists.
In her current role, she teaches CSD 548 Medical Speech Practicum, supervises first-year graduate students in charter school therapy services, and observes second-year students during medical placements. Her professional commitment extends to advocacy through the Brain Injury Association of Ohio, where she contributes both clinical insights and personal perspective as a family member of someone with brain injury.
