Professor Melissa Tyler is a Professor of Work and Organization Studies at the Essex Business School (EBS), University of Essex. She serves as Co-Director of the Centre for Work, Organisation and Society and Associate Director of Research and Impact in the Organisational Studies/Human Resource Management group. Her research focuses on gender, feminist theory, and embodiment in workplace contexts, with particular attention to emotion, aesthetics, sexuality, and spatial materiality. She chairs the Judith Butler Research Network and actively supervises PhD students exploring gender inequality, queer theory, and creative sector labor dynamics.
Education: B Soc Sci (Hons) in Cultural Studies, PG Dip in Research Methods, PhD in Sociology. Academic leadership roles include editorial positions at Organization and advisory roles at Gender, Work and Organization.
Research interests include precarious work in creative industries, spatial dimensions of organizational life, and feminist critiques of recognition and ethics in work settings. Her recent work examines post-pandemic labor challenges for live performers and the intersection of gender with workplace aesthetics and spatial practices.
