Melissa Scales

Melissa Scales, PT, DPT, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy Education at Elon University’s School of Health Sciences. She holds a PhD in Learning Design and Technology from North Carolina State University, a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) from Duke University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and Dance from the College of Santa Fe. Her academic career includes board certification in pediatric physical therapy and leadership roles such as Assistant Director of Elon’s Accelerated Pathways Program.

Her research focuses on idiopathic toe walking, technology-enhanced pedagogy, and the development of learning and study strategies in entry-level physical therapy students. Key scientific awards include the 2023 Education Innovator Award, the 2015 Outstanding Clinical Instructor Award, and the 2014 Carol Gildenberg Dichter Memorial Fund Scholarship. She has secured multiple grants from Elon University for research on pediatric gait analysis and teaching innovations.

Melissa’s grants include funding for studies on carbon fiber orthotics in idiopathic toe walking, student-faculty partnerships in teaching, and adapted sports programs. She actively contributes to professional education through committee leadership, curriculum development, and international service learning initiatives in Belize, Guatemala, and India.
