Dr. Melissa Laufer is a Senior Researcher and Project Lead at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) in Berlin, where she heads the 'Organizational Resilience and Creativity' (ORC) research initiative examining educational technology in higher education. Her work represents a collaboration between HIIG and CATALPA at FernUniversität in Hagen.
She holds a PhD in Sociology from Ghent University (2020), an MA in Intercultural Communication & European Studies from Hochschule Fulda, and a BA in International Studies/German/Anthropology from the University of Oregon. Previously, she conducted research at York University (Canada) and Centre for Higher Education Governance Ghent.
Her research examines organizational change dynamics in higher education institutions, with specific focus on:
- Implementation of educational technologies and digital teaching methods
- Organizational culture, leadership, and strategy development
- University resilience during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic
- Internationalization processes and academic mobility
Laufer has received multiple mobility scholarships supporting research visits at DZHW (Germany), National Chengchi University (Taiwan), and Boston College. She maintains memberships in Early Career Higher Education Researchers (ECHER), Gesellschaft für Hochschulforschung, and ECPR Standing Group – Knowledge Politics & Policies.
