Dr. Melissa K Byrnes is a Professor of History at Southwestern University, specializing in Modern European History, French colonialism, migration, and postcolonial studies. She holds a PhD from Georgetown University (2008), an MSFS from Georgetown (2003), and a BA from Amherst College (2000). Her research focuses on North African migration, decolonization, and the intersections of race, religion, and imperialism in France and its former colonies.
Her major works include Making Space: Neighbors, Officials, and North African Migrants in the Suburbs of Paris and Lyon (2023) and co-editing Fertility, Family, and Social Welfare Between France and Empire (2023). She has received grants such as the ACLS/Mellon Fellowships and the Garey Sabbatical. Byrnes is affiliated with organizations like the American Historical Association and the Society for French Historical Studies.
Her recent articles explore topics like post-decolonization policing of North African families, Franco-Portuguese student activism in the 1960s, and French diplomatic strategies during decolonization. She regularly contributes to Lawyers Guns & Money and has delivered guest lectures on migration, imperialism, and art looting.
