Melissa Holmes is a Professor at the University of Toronto Mississauga, affiliated with the Department of Psychology. Her research focuses on behavioral neuroscience, neuroendocrinology, and neuroplasticity, particularly investigating how social status influences brain structure and function in eusocial mammals.
- B.A. in Psychology, Simon Fraser University
- M.A. in Biopsychology, University of British Columbia
- Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Michigan State University
- Post-doc in Neuroscience, University of Massachusetts, Amherst
Her lab studies the neuroendocrine mechanisms of social status, individual differences in social phenotypes, and social environment regulation of adult neurogenesis using naked mole-rats as a model organism. Research emphasizes the reciprocal relationship between social interactions and brain plasticity.
Recent publications highlight cross-disciplinary work spanning neuroendocrinology, molecular neuroscience, and behavioral analysis. Research themes include oxytocin signaling, reproductive suppression, social hierarchy effects, and seasonal adaptation mechanisms.
- Graduate students and trainees: Skyler Mooney, Diana Peragine, Ashlyn Swift-Gallant, and others
