Melissa Gross is a Professor in the School of Information at Florida State University's College of Communication & Information (CCI). She has been part of the university since August 1999, following her Ph.D. from UCLA (1998). Her research focuses on information literacy, library program evaluation, youth information resources, and social services in libraries. She teaches courses such as LIS 2527 (Digital Storytelling), LIS 5271 (Research in Information Studies), and LIS 5564–5566 (Information Needs of Children/Young Adults).
Education: Ph.D. in Library and Information Science from UCLA (1998). Awards include the AAUW Recognition Award (2001), ALISE Professional Contribution Award (2019), and multiple teaching/research accolades. She has also contributed to the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy, emphasizing pedagogical innovation.
Research Interests: Library program evaluation, information literacy instruction, youth information needs, and the evolving role of librarians in social service provision. She has led studies on community college librarians' perspectives, telepractice in education, and ICT use in child welfare.
Teaching & Advising: Known for excellence in online teaching (2014–2015 Distance Learning Award), she advises on research methodologies and youth-focused information services. Her courses emphasize collaborative teaching between librarians and educators.
Awards & Recognition: Over 20 awards, including leadership roles in ALISE and CCI’s Leadership Board. Her work bridges LIS education and practical service delivery, with a focus on equity and community impact.
