Melissa F. Baird is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the Great Lakes Research Center (GLRC). She is currently on leave for the 2024-25 academic year. Her research focuses on extractive zones, heritage studies, and Indigenous cultural landscapes, examining intersections between environmental anthropology, corporate discourse, and social justice. She holds a PhD from the University of Oregon (2009) and a BA from the University of California, Berkeley (1999). Prior to her academic role, she served as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Stanford University (2011-2013).
Her work addresses critical issues such as the impact of extractive industries on Indigenous communities, the politics of heritage preservation, and the relationship between cultural landscapes and environmental crises. Recent research includes studies on post-extractive landscapes, UNESCO heritage processes, and maritime heritage in the context of global ecological breakdown.
Baird’s contributions bridge theoretical frameworks in critical heritage studies with applied research in resource frontiers, emphasizing equity and cultural rights. She has been involved in initiatives like the Husky PAWS S-STEM Scholar Program, reflecting her commitment to STEM education and access in higher education.
