Jennifer Anne Baird is a Professor of Archaeology at the School of Historical Studies, Birkbeck College, University of London, where she has held positions since 2008. She is a leading scholar in Roman provincial archaeology, with a focus on Dura-Europos in Syria and the Roman Near East. Her research spans archaeological archives, ancient graffiti, domestic architecture, and cultural heritage in conflict zones.
Her scholarly output reveals a sustained engagement with archaeological photography, visual methodologies, and critical heritage studies. Recent publications explore structured silences in archival research, household infrastructure, and economic networks in frontier regions. She has co-edited major volumes on ancient housing and archaeological archives, advancing frameworks for material-textual analysis and decolonizing archaeology.
Baird’s scientific contributions include fellowships at the Society of Antiquaries and Higher Education Academy. She directs the Carena Institute of Sustainable Archaeologies, co-leads the Dura-Europos Rehabilitation Taskforce, and mentors displaced Syrian archaeologists through organizations like the Council for At-Risk Academics. Her PhD students investigate topics ranging from Iron Age Thames landscapes to children’s archaeology at Dura-Europos, reflecting her interdisciplinary influence.
