Melissa A. Clark is a Professor in the Departments of Health Services Policy & Practice and Obstetrics and Gynecology at Brown University’s School of Public Health. She holds dual appointments, reflecting her interdisciplinary work bridging public health and clinical medicine. Her research focuses on health disparities, survey methodology, and vulnerable populations, particularly examining barriers to healthcare access and well-being among marginalized groups.
Clark received her Ph.D. in Public Health Sciences from the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Brown University. She directs the School of Public Health Survey Research Center, leading large-scale projects in questionnaire design, mixed-methods research, and data analysis.
Her work spans topics such as opioid use disorder treatment, postpartum mental health, surgical outcomes for cancer patients, and healthcare provider well-being. Notable projects include developing smartphone apps to reduce postpartum depression and assessing spillover effects of alcohol interventions in college students.
Clark has authored over 300 peer-reviewed articles, with recent contributions addressing overdose risk behaviors during the pandemic, obstetrician trauma responses, and racial disparities in lung cancer surgery. She collaborates across disciplines, including emergency medicine, rehabilitation, and oncology, to address systemic barriers in healthcare delivery.
