Melanie Walls is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the University of Western Australia (UWA) Medical School in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and serves as the Scientific Director at Concept Fertility Centre in Subiaco, WA since March 2024. She is a CMLS-accredited Clinical Scientist with over 18 years of specialized expertise in IVF laboratories across Western Australia.
Dr. Walls earned her Doctorate from the University of Western Australia in 2016, with research focused on In Vitro Maturation (IVM). Her academic journey has been complemented by extensive clinical and laboratory experience in reproductive medicine.
Dr. Walls' research spans multiple critical areas in reproductive science, with particular focus on Polycystic ovary syndrome, In vitro fertilization, In vitro maturation, Microbiome, and Preimplantation genetic testing. Her work intersects with several UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and wellbeing. Through her fingerprint analysis, her research forms a unique profile centered around oocyte biology, embryo transfer techniques, and fertility optimization.
Her publication record shows a consistent focus on improving assisted reproductive technology outcomes, with recent work examining environmental factors (such as air pollution and seasonal variations), medication safety during pregnancy, and the impact of diet and microbiome on male fertility. These studies often involve large-scale population analyses and collaborations with leading researchers in the field.
Dr. Walls holds several significant leadership positions including:
- Co-leader of the RAINE Foundation Hormonal and Reproduction Special Interest Group
- Lead Immigration Skills Assessor for IVF Scientists with the Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists (AIMS)
- Member of the West Australian Department of Health Pre-Implantation Genetic Testing (PGT) Committee
- Technical expert assessor for the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA)
She actively mentors students and accepts PhD and Higher Degree by Research candidates, having secured research funding through the WIRF Research Acceleration Awards - Graduate Student Stream (2023-2024) where she served as Investigator 02 alongside colleagues Ireland and Magoutas. Her work at Concept Fertility Centre provides a robust clinical research environment where academic inquiry meets practical application in reproductive medicine.
