Melanie Heath is a Professor of Sociology and Associate Dean of Graduate Students at McMaster University's Faculty of Social Sciences. Her research focuses on the politics of family, sexuality, and gender, with a particular emphasis on how states regulate intimate relationships and gender norms. She holds a PhD from the University of Southern California and has authored influential works like Forbidden Intimacies: Polygamies at the Limits of Western Tolerance (2023), which won the Sexualities 2024 Distinguished Book Award.
Her current SSHRC-funded research examines family and sexual norms in France, Canada, and the U.S., exploring how policy shapes intimate choices. Key areas of study include polygamy regulation, marriage promotion policies, and religious conservatism's impact on gender roles. She teaches courses on classical theory, gender/sexuality studies, and qualitative research methods.
Publications span topics like condom use in Canada, gender gaps in sexual satisfaction, and anti-LGBT movements. Her work bridges sociology, political science, and cultural studies, addressing themes of power, identity, and social policy. Recent contributions include co-editing Global Feminist Autoethnographies During COVID-19 (2022).
