Roman Kuhar is an Associate Professor at the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, where he currently serves as Head of the Department and Head of its research unit. He teaches courses on gender, sexuality, popular culture, and everyday life.
His research focuses on Gender Studies, Sexuality Studies, and LGBT Studies, with specific emphasis on media representations of homosexuality, discrimination frameworks, intimate citizenship, and Eastern European LGBT experiences. His methodology centers on sociological analysis of cultural narratives and lived realities, particularly examining how privacy norms and societal structures shape queer identities in post-socialist contexts.
Kuhar's publications demonstrate consistent thematic evolution from media analysis (2003) toward intersectional discrimination studies (2009) and intimate citizenship frameworks (2010), culminating in regional comparative works on Eastern European LGBT communities (2007, 2011). His co-edited volume "Beyond The Pink Curtain" established foundational scholarship on post-socialist queer experiences, while "Doing Families" pioneered family practices research in non-Western contexts.
