Professor Melanie Bell is a leading scholar in British Film Studies and Feminist Film History at the University of Leeds. She holds a PhD, MA, and BA, and specializes in uncovering women's contributions to film production through oral histories and archival research. Her current AHRC-funded project 'Film Costumes in Action' examines costume design cultures in British film (1965-2015). She has authored groundbreaking works like Movie Workers (2021), which won the BAFTSS Best Monograph Prize and the Richard Wall Memorial Award. Bell collaborates with institutions like the British Film Institute and leads workshops to archive marginalized voices in film history. She supervises postgraduate researcher Sharon Hooper and has received multiple academic awards for her scholarship.
Her research focuses on gendered labor in film production, feminist methodologies, and archiving women’s film culture. She has published widely on topics ranging from costume design networks in 1930s Britain to the creative agency of actress Julie Christie. Bell’s work bridges academic research with public engagement through film seasons, wikithons, and collaborations with practitioners and archivists.
