Jennifer Voss is a Postdoctoral Researcher at De Montfort University, affiliated with the School of Humanities and Performing Arts within the Faculty of Arts, Design and Humanities. Her work bridges film history, performance studies, and archival research, with a strong focus on women’s experiences in early cinema.

Her research investigates women’s screen acting during the transition from silent to sound cinema, utilizing performance theory and archival analysis. She explores fan-made scrapbooks, fan magazines, and ephemera to reconstruct the performative identities and emotional labor of actresses in early Hollywood and British cinema. Her interdisciplinary approach combines feminist theory, performance studies, and film historiography.
The recent publications reflect a consistent focus on gender, emotion, and archival representation in early film culture. Her work emphasizes uncovering marginalized narratives, particularly those of women performers, through innovative methodological frameworks involving material culture and visual archives.

Jennifer was awarded Midlands 4 Cities funding for her PhD and currently leads a postdoctoral project titled 'Scrapbooking Screencraft: Exploring Performativity, Agency, and Women’s Screen Acting in the Archive'. She has extensive experience working in university and national archives, including DMU Special Collections, Hammer Script Archive, Peter Whitehead Archive, and the Indian Cinema Archive.
