Mel Hochster is the Jack E. McLaughlin Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He holds a B.A. from Harvard College (1964), an M.A. from Princeton University (1966), and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Princeton (1967). His academic career includes roles such as Chair of the University of Michigan Mathematics Department (2008–2017) and visiting positions at institutions like the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI).
Hochster's research focuses on commutative algebra, with contributions to tight closure theory, local cohomology, and homological conjectures. His work bridges algebraic geometry and combinatorics, addressing foundational questions in ring theory and module structures. He has been honored with the Cole Prize in Algebra (1980), Guggenheim Fellowship (1982), and membership in the National Academy of Sciences (1992).
He has delivered invited lectures globally, including at the International Congress of Mathematicians (1978), NSF-CBMS conferences, and numerous universities. His editorial roles include the Michigan Mathematical Journal and Advances in Mathematics. Hochster has also contributed to educational initiatives, such as the ADVANCE program at the University of Michigan, promoting equity and inclusion in STEM.
