Professor Mel Dodd is the Dean of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture at Monash University. She holds a PhD in Architecture from RMIT University and has led departments at institutions including Central Saint Martins (UAL) and RMIT. Her research focuses on urban placemaking, co-design methodologies, and inclusive urban environments, with a particular emphasis on disaster resilience and community engagement. She directs the Monash Urban Lab and co-leads the Fire to Flourish program’s 'Co-Design for Placemaking' initiative.
Education: PhD by Practice (RMIT University, 2011); studies at the University of Cambridge.
Research Interests: Urban regeneration, participatory design, sustainable architecture, and the intersection of architecture with social equity. Recent projects include Re-Grounding: Regenerative Urbanism and Prefab Housing Solutions for Bushfire & Disaster Relief. She curated Ground Melbourne for the 2023 Seoul Biennale, showcasing Melbourne’s urban identity globally.
Grants & Projects: Principal investigator on Building 4.0 CRC’s prefab housing project and Monash’s NCHA Independent Living Lab. Collaborations include muf architecture/art and Living Cities Forum.
Awards: 2024 Regional town category winner for 'Many Place' in the Reimagining Where We Live competition.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Monash Urban Lab and contributes to Monash’s interdisciplinary Future Healthcare initiative.
