Mekonnen Tesfahuney is a Professor of Human Geography at Karlstad University, specializing in migration, racism, postcolonial theory, and geophilosophy. His doctoral work (1998, Uppsala University) focused on migration discourses and racism, and he previously led the 'Multicultural School' research project at Gothenburg University (1999-2001). His research interrogates whiteness, racialized spatial practices, postcolonial memory, and the politics of mobility.
Key themes include the intersection of migration, racism, and geopolitics; postcolonial spatial theory; and the post-political turn in contemporary governance. He co-edited influential works like The Best of All Possible Worlds? (2008) and The Global Travel Privilege (2010), which explore territorial politics, tourist mobilities, and global hierarchies of movement. His work critiques neoliberal education policies, urban fearscapes, and the spatial manifestations of racism.
Recent publications address tourism's spatial futures (The Tourismocene, 2024), European identity crises (Quo Vadis Europe?, 2023), and speculative urban theories. He has held research grants exploring aging mobilities, media discourses on migration, and post-secular pilgrimage tourism.
Labs/teams: Active in Karlstad University's Human Geography research group, collaborating with scholars like Richard Ek and Magnus Dahlstedt on projects blending critical theory, spatial analysis, and postcolonial critique.
