Dr. Mekala Sundaram is an Assistant Professor at the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine, affiliated with the Department of Infectious Diseases and the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory. She holds a BSc in Life Sciences from the University of Mumbai, an MSc in Conservation Biology from Central Michigan University, and a PhD in Quantitative Ecology from Purdue University. Her postdoctoral training includes positions at Brown University, Stanford University, the University of Georgia, and Oklahoma State University.
Her research focuses on quantitative approaches to understand zoonotic disease transmission, pathogen spillover events, and ecosystem health. She employs advanced statistical tools, machine learning, and remote sensing data to study reservoir hosts, disease forecasting, and the ecological and socioeconomic drivers of infectious diseases. Key areas include ebolavirus reservoir identification, tick-borne disease dynamics, and the impacts of climate and conflict on pathogen emergence.
Dr. Sundaram’s work bridges ecology, epidemiology, and data science, addressing global health challenges such as zoonotic spillover and biodiversity loss. She collaborates with interdisciplinary teams and leverages cutting-edge methods to inform conservation and public health strategies.
