Dr. Michael Yabsley is the Arnett C. Mace Jr. Distinguished Professor in the Department of Wildlife Health at the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine. His research focuses on wildlife diseases, zoonotic pathogens, and parasitology, with a particular emphasis on understanding disease dynamics in wildlife populations and their implications for human and ecosystem health. He holds a PhD in Infectious Diseases from the University of Georgia (2004), an MS in Zoology (Parasitology) from Clemson University (2000), and a BS in Biological Sciences from Clemson University (1997).
Dr. Yabsley has received numerous awards, including the AAVP-William C. Campbell One-Health Award (2021), UGA CVM Distinguished Graduate Alumni Award (2021), and UGA Creative Research Medal (2018). His work bridges laboratory and field studies, addressing critical issues such as tick-borne diseases, emerging zoonoses, and the ecology of wildlife pathogens.
His research interests include the epidemiology of vector-borne pathogens, the role of wildlife in disease transmission, and the impact of environmental changes on disease dynamics. He leads the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study, a collaborative initiative focused on wildlife health surveillance.
Dr. Yabsley's recent publications highlight investigations into zoonotic pathogens like Salmonella, tick-borne diseases (e.g., Lyme disease vectors), and emerging threats such as the Asian longhorned tick. His work emphasizes One Health principles, integrating veterinary, ecological, and public health perspectives.
