London-based Meili Li is the first countertenor from China to achieve an international career and currently serves as Visiting Artist at King's College London's Department of Music (2024-2026). He is also a resident artist with the Royal Shakespeare Company and The CounterTenor Project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
His educational background includes:
- Bachelor's degrees in Film and Philosophy from Peking University
- MA and DipRAM (with Distinction) in Voice from the Royal Academy of Music
- Artist Diploma (with Distinction) in Opera from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama
- Fellowship from Independent Opera
Li's artistic work centers on Western Classical Music with specialized focus on Opera and Art Song, integrating his Chinese cultural heritage into interpretations of Western repertoire. His performances span Renaissance lute songs, Baroque/Classical operas, German/French Lieder, and contemporary commissions including Karol Beffa's 'Fragments of China'.
His recognition includes:
- Farinelli Prize (2016)
- 2nd Prize at London Handel Festival Singing Competition (2022)
Li maintains an active performance schedule across major venues including Carnegie Hall, Barbican Centre, and European opera houses, with recent CD releases featuring works by Fux and upcoming recordings of Handel's 'Giulio Cesare'.
