Meike Bartels is a Full Professor in Biological Psychology and holds a University Research Professorship in Genetics and Wellbeing at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU). She is affiliated with the Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences and the APH - Personalized Medicine department. Her research focuses on the genetic and environmental determinants of wellbeing, mental health, and behavior, with a particular emphasis on developmental and behavioral genetics.
Prof. Bartels leads major grants, including the NWO VICI-funded 'The Power of Wellbeing' (2023–2028), exploring multi-omics approaches to wellbeing frameworks. She also contributed to the ERC Consolidator Grant 'WELL-BEING' (2018–2024) and projects like ENLIGHTENme (2021–2024), addressing lighting's impact on health and wellbeing. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly mental health and well-being (SDG 3).
Her research interests span genetic determinism, heritability, and the exposome-genome interplay. Notable contributions include studies on metabolite concentrations and wellbeing, social jetlag, and longitudinal twin-family analyses of intellectual disability siblings. She has supervised 20 PhD theses and serves on the Board of Directors of the International Positive Psychology Association.
Bartels has received prestigious awards, including the Fuller/Scott Award (2008), Thompson Award (2002), and a University Research Chair (2014). She actively engages in media and public lectures, contributing to societal discussions on genetics and wellbeing.
