Mehrnoush Soroush is an Assistant Professor in Ancient Near Eastern Studies at the University of Chicago and Director of the Center for Ancient Middle Eastern Landscapes (CAMEL) Lab. She is affiliated with the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures and the Forum for Digital Culture, focusing on the intersection of urban development and water management in the Ancient Near East.
Her educational background includes a Ph.D. from New York University's Institute for the Study of the Ancient World (2016) and an M.A. in Architecture from the University of Tehran, Iran.
Dr. Soroush's research examines how ancient cities adapted to environmental and socio-political changes through hydraulic innovations, with particular emphasis on the Parthian, Sasanian, and Islamic periods. Her interdisciplinary methodology integrates archaeological fieldwork, textual analysis, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, and computational techniques. She has re-examined canal irrigation systems in southwestern Iran during the Sasanian and early Islamic eras and currently leads water history investigations in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq through the Erbil Plain Archaeological Survey (EPAS), focusing on the transition to qanat-based irrigation.
As Director of the CAMEL Lab, she oversees research initiatives that apply digital and spatial technologies to ancient landscape studies. Her work bridges traditional archaeology with cutting-edge computational approaches to reconstruct historical environmental interactions.
