Megan Simmons, DNP, PMHNP-BC, is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (Lifespan) Specialty at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing. She joined the faculty in 2013 after earning her DNP from Vanderbilt in 2013, with a scholarly project on antipsychotic medication usage in nursing homes. She has been a board-certified PMHNP since 2005 and has practiced as a consultant in long-term care facilities since 2006.
Education includes a BA from Elon University, MSN in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (Vanderbilt), and DNP in Nursing Practice Research (Vanderbilt). Her research focuses on geriatric psychopharmacology, mental health care for older adults, and dementia symptom management. She chairs the Geropsych Focus Group within the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association and participates in multiple professional organizations.
Her work emphasizes non-pharmacological dementia care strategies and improving telehealth training for nursing students. Awards include the 2014 Middle Tennessee Behavioral Health Nurse of the Year Award.
