Dr. Megan Sapnar Ankerson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and Media at the University of Michigan. Her work bridges media studies, digital humanities, and science studies, focusing on new media technologies' socio-cultural impacts. Key research areas include web history, AI-driven historiography, and the temporal dimensions of computational systems.
Research Focus:
- Investigates 'Big Data Time Machines'—computational systems that reconfigure human experiences of time
- Explores intersections between science fiction narratives and real-world AI applications
- Analyzes historical evolution of web design from 1990s dot-com era to present
Her book Dot-com Design (NYU Press, 2018) remains a foundational text in digital media history. Current projects examine how large-scale neural networks and distributed systems are reshaping historical consciousness through high-resolution data modeling.
Teaching: Courses focus on critical media studies, digital humanities methodologies, and the ethical implications of emerging technologies.
