Robbert-Jan Adriaansen

Robbert-Jan Adriaansen is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Erasmus University Rotterdam and holds the EuroClio Endowed Chair in Historical Culture in Transition at Ghent University. He serves as Executive Director of the Center for Historical Culture and co-leads the Heritage & Identity research cluster. His research examines historical consciousness, digital culture, and memory practices, with recent work analyzing the impact of globalization and digitization on historical narratives.

Adriaansen's research focuses on multimodal historical representation, digital memory formation, and pedagogical approaches in history education. He explores how societies navigate complex historical frameworks amidst technological and political change, with specific interests in re-enactment practices, social media historiography, and transnational memory cultures.

His publications demonstrate interdisciplinary engagement with digital humanities, cultural studies, and education theory, often investigating how digital platforms reshape historical understanding. Adriaansen received his PhD cum laude from Erasmus University Rotterdam in 2013. As Endowed Chair at Ghent University, he works on theoretical frameworks for analyzing historical culture transformations.
