Megan McCaghey is an Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in the Department of Plant Pathology. Her research focuses on the ecology and epidemiology of soil-associated fungi and oomycetes, with an emphasis on enhancing host disease resistance to improve crop management. She leads the McCaghey Lab, which collaborates with growers and interdisciplinary researchers to foster an inclusive environment. Dr. McCaghey holds a PhD in plant pathology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an MSc in international agricultural development from UC Davis, and a BA in environmental studies from Hendrix College.

Her research interests include translational studies on soil-borne fungal pathogens like Diaporthe helianthi and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, as well as innovative teaching methods that prioritize inclusivity and learner-centered strategies. Recent work emphasizes integrated approaches for managing crop diseases, including genetic resistance breeding, molecular diagnostics, and environmental control tactics.
Publications highlight advancements in understanding pathogen virulence mechanisms, fungicide resistance dynamics, and the development of novel control strategies such as host-induced gene silencing (HIGS). The lab’s interdisciplinary focus bridges fundamental research with applied solutions for sustainable agriculture.
