Megan Gerber

Megan Gerber, MD, MPH is a Clinical Professor at Albany Medical College where she serves as division chief of General Internal Medicine, vice chair of the Department of Medicine for Faculty Development, and assistant dean of health humanities. Her work uniquely bridges clinical medicine, medical education, and the health humanities through trauma-informed care approaches.

Dr. Gerber completed her medical degree at Hershey Medical Center (1991), followed by residency and internship in Internal Medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital of the University of Rochester (1992-1994). She earned a Master of Public Health from Harvard School of Public Health (2001) and completed a fellowship there in 2005.

Her research focuses on trauma-informed care, which integrates understanding of trauma and adverse childhood experiences into holistic medical practice. She has developed expertise in women's health within this framework and explores how arts and social sciences can illuminate the human experience of health and illness. As an abstract painter, she creates 'emotional landscapes' that visually express healing processes and patient perspectives, with her work appearing in the Journal of General Medicine and Intima: A Journal of Narrative Medicine.

Dr. Gerber's scholarly contributions demonstrate consistent innovation in trauma-informed approaches, culminating in her edited text 'Trauma-informed Healthcare Approaches: A Guide for Primary Care' (Springer, 2019) and ongoing research examining the impact of these approaches on patient outcomes.

As vice chair for Faculty Development and former advising dean, Dr. Gerber mentors medical students and residents while advocating for integration of humanities into medical training. Dr. Gerber leads interdisciplinary initiatives connecting clinicians, educators, and artists to transform healthcare delivery through narrative medicine principles and creative expression, establishing Albany Medical College as a leader in health humanities education.
