Megan Ewing is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at the University of Michigan, affiliated with the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA). She holds a Ph.D. in German Studies from Princeton University (2017). Her research focuses on postwar German and Austrian literature, particularly through the lens of environmental humanities, examining themes such as space, scale, and sensory engagement in 20th- and 21st-century literature and art. She is currently working on a book project exploring ecological thinking in the neo-avantgarde, analyzing the psychogeography of the Situationist International and its influence on German-speaking authors and artists. This work bridges multisensory aesthetic models with political action, addressing contemporary issues like climate change, global migration, and their intersection with identity and spatiality.
Her teaching emphasizes German ecocriticism, fairy tales, international avant-garde movements, and the relationship between art and revolution. Courses include GERMAN 386-001 (Fairy Tales) and GERMAN 491-001 (German Honors Proseminar). Megan Ewing is also part of the Graduate Faculty, contributing to programs such as the Accelerated MA in Transcultural Studies and the Ph.D. Program in Germanic Languages and Literatures. She is involved with departmental initiatives like the Germanic Faculty to Lunch Program and Alamanya: Transnational German Studies RIW. Her office is located at 3208 MLB, with regular office hours (Tuesday 12-1 PM and Friday 12-1 PM).
Megan Ewing’s work integrates aesthetic theory with political and cultural analysis, advocating for intimate attention to local and affective dimensions to address global challenges. She actively participates in interdisciplinary workshops and graduate mentorship, supporting students through initiatives like the Rackham Interdisciplinary Workshops and the Sturm FU Berlin Exchange Program.
