Professor Meg Maguire is a Professor of Sociology of Education at King's College London's School of Education, Communication & Society. She holds visiting roles as a former Visiting Professor at Victoria University (2013–2016) and Honorary Professor at The Education University of Hong Kong (2021–2023). Her research focuses on the sociology of education, urban education policy, and the lived experiences of teachers, with a particular emphasis on issues of class, race, gender, and age in educational contexts.
Research Interests:
- Exploring how social inequalities intersect with educational policies and practices.
- Policy enactments in schools, particularly in urban settings.
- Teacher identity, professional development, and retirement dynamics.
- Equitable transitions for marginalized youth in post-school pathways.
Publications: Her recent work addresses apprenticeship reforms, teacher education in diverse contexts, and post-school transitions for non-university pathways. Articles often critique policy frameworks through an equity lens, emphasizing systemic inequities and the need for contextualized solutions.
Awards: She co-earned the 2024 Faculty Supervisory Excellence Award with Dr. Emma Towers, recognizing their impactful mentorship.
Grants & Projects: Co-PI on a £2.2M ESRC-funded study on vocational education reforms (2019–2024) and led projects on teacher policy enactments and ageism in academia. Current work includes exploring school-to-work transitions through an 'equalities-ecologies' framework.
