Dr. Meenu Tewari is a Professor in the Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she also directs the Modern Indian Studies Initiative. Her research focuses on the political economy of economic development, globalization’s impact on local economies, and institutional resilience in developed and developing nations. She specializes in global value chains, labor standards, urban informal economies, and climate change adaptation. Dr. Tewari holds affiliations with organizations such as the Institute of Small Enterprise Development (India) and has consulted for international bodies including the World Bank and Asian Development Bank.
Her academic background includes teaching at MIT (1997–1999) and a postdoctoral fellowship at the IFO Institute for Economic Research in Munich. Current research projects include a book on urban water access in India and studies on economic resilience in Indian cities. She is actively involved in policy-oriented work addressing climate-proofing infrastructure and labor conditions in global supply chains.
Dr. Tewari’s scholarship bridges theory and practice, emphasizing equitable development pathways that integrate environmental sustainability and social justice. She is widely published in journals and books exploring urbanization, global commodity chains, and institutional dynamics in South Asia and beyond.
