Dr. Meena Rafiq is a Senior Clinical Research Fellow and Academic General Practitioner (GP) at University College London (UCL), affiliated with the Behavioural Science and Health department. Her primary role involves accelerating cancer diagnosis through analysis of primary care data. She completed a PhD in early cancer diagnosis at UCL and an MSc in Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She holds multiple prestigious fellowships including NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowships and a Royal Marsden Partners Fellowship.
Her research interests span clinical oncology, epidemiology, and data science, with a focus on leveraging electronic health records to optimize diagnostic pathways. Key areas include inflammatory marker testing, blood tests in primary care, and symptom-driven cancer detection. She has contributed to studies in Australia, Canada, and the UK to improve diagnostic precision and reduce delays.
Dr. Rafiq has received awards for her work on Hodgkin lymphoma, steroid prescribing patterns, and COPD management. Her research also addresses socioeconomic disparities in cancer incidence and the role of chronic conditions like diabetes in symptom interpretation. She collaborates with the Epidemiology of Cancer Healthcare and Outcomes (ECHO) group and the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC) Data Hub, emphasizing interdisciplinary data-driven approaches to healthcare challenges.
