Professor Georgios Lyratzopoulos is a Professor of Cancer Epidemiology at University College London (UCL), affiliated with the Behavioural Science and Health department. He leads the Epidemiology of Cancer Healthcare and Outcomes (ECHO) research group, which he founded in 2015. His work focuses on cancer healthcare systems, early diagnosis research, and improving cancer outcomes through epidemiological studies.
His educational background includes:
- M.D. from University of Manchester (2008)
- Master of Public Health from University of Liverpool (2000)
- Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene from Royal College of Physicians (1993)
- Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP, 2009)
- Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health (FFPH, 2006)
Professor Lyratzopoulos specializes in cancer epidemiology with a focus on early diagnosis pathways, healthcare systems analysis, and patient journeys through the diagnostic process. His research examines how symptoms lead to cancer diagnosis, variations in diagnostic activity, and the impact of healthcare policies on cancer outcomes. He has made significant contributions to understanding emergency presentations of cancer and the role of primary care in early cancer detection, with his work cited in major policy documents including the National Cancer Strategy for England and the U.S. Institute of Medicine Report "Improving Diagnosis in Health Care".
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on international comparisons of cancer diagnosis and treatment through the International Cancer Benchmarking Partnership, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cancer care pathways, innovative methods for analyzing cancer pathways using large datasets, and health disparities in cancer diagnosis. His research spans multiple cancer types with particular attention to gastrointestinal cancers, lung cancer, and prostate cancer.
His significant awards include:
- Future Leader in Cancer Research (2016, Cancer Research UK)
- Advanced Clinician Scientist Fellow (2015-2020, Cancer Research UK)
- NIHR Post-Doctoral Fellow (2012-2014)
Professor Lyratzopoulos has mentored numerous junior researchers, with 89 published joint papers first-authored by junior colleagues and collaborators. These include 45 papers with statistical colleagues (36 with him as last author) and 44 papers first-authored by junior researchers including PhD students, medical trainees, and project secondees (27 with him as last author). His research has secured substantial grant funding through Cancer Research UK and the National Institute for Health Research.
The Epidemiology of Cancer Healthcare and Outcomes (ECHO) research group, founded in 2015, serves as a hub for collaborative cancer epidemiology research, working with national and international partners to improve understanding of cancer diagnosis pathways and healthcare utilization patterns. The team's work has significantly influenced cancer policy and practice, particularly in the areas of early diagnosis and healthcare system optimization for cancer patients.
