Dr. Medora W. Barnes is a Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Sociology and Criminology at John Carroll University. She holds a B.A. from Trinity College, followed by an M.A., Ph.D. in Sociology, and a Graduate Certificate in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from the University of Connecticut. Her research focuses on gendered life transitions, particularly work-family dynamics, pregnancy/parenthood, and identity formation. She has published in journals like Journal of Family Issues and Qualitative Sociology Review.
Her research interests include gendered labor market participation, ideologies of parenthood, Disney fandom studies, and the intersection of health and gender. Notable awards include the 2022 William F. O'Hearn Award for Faculty Advising, reflecting her dedication to student mentorship.
