Meaghan Barlow is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Wilfrid Laurier University, part of the Faculty of Science. Her research focuses on understanding how emotions and self-regulation influence well-being and health across adulthood, particularly in contexts like aging, chronic illness, and pandemic-related stressors. She leads the Self-Regulation, Emotion, and Aging Lab, which investigates emotion control beliefs, goal adjustment strategies, and their impacts on physical and psychological health.
Her work integrates lifespan development perspectives, examining age-related differences in emotion processing (e.g., emotion globalizing) and the interplay between interpersonal relationships (e.g., couples' health dynamics) and individual well-being. Recent studies explore how goal adjustment capacities buffer against stress in uncontrollable situations like the COVID-19 pandemic and chronic illnesses. Methodologically, she employs longitudinal designs, daily diary assessments, and systematic review approaches.
Key research themes include: (1) emotion regulation mechanisms in older adults; (2) goal disengagement/reengagement as adaptive strategies; (3) bidirectional relationships between psychological states and physical health outcomes; and (4) contextual factors influencing self-regulatory processes. Her findings contribute to interventions targeting resilience in aging populations and improving health outcomes through emotion-focused strategies.
